Note this is not on the MathType tab in Word it is in MathType itself. This command is in MathType Help menu, under MathType on the Web. If you want to check more often, manually choose the Check for Latest Version Now… command whenever you want to check for a newer version. MathType will normally perform this check once a month. After checking the version, a dialog will be displayed letting you know the results of the comparison. The checks access the latest MathType version information via your Internet connection.
